(b) State the function of the following:
(i) thermostat;
(ii) water pump
(iii) water jacket
(c)State two functions of the flywheel.
Observation
Most of the candidates who attempted this question had difficulties in providing the required responses to parts (a), and (b) of the question. The required responses to parts (a) and (b) of the question are:
(a) The sketch of a radiator with parts labelled.
(b) (i) The thermostat
- controls the temperature of the coolant within the range of 750C to 850C.
OR
- blocks the flow of coolant to the radiator till the engine warms up.
(ii) Water Pump
- speeds up circulation of coolant to various parts of the engine.
- OR
- directs water to the dead spot of an engine.
(iii) Water Jacket
- acts as a water passage to allow water to cool various parts of the engine.
OR
- acts as storage tank for water in an engine.
