Weakness and Remedies
The candidates were generally weak in:
- stating three preliminary site activities prior to site levelling;
- stating the properties of fresh concrete;
- sketching the 3:4:5 method of setting-out a building and labelling the building line and set back;
- sketching a cross-section through a formwork for concrete lintel and labelling of soleplate and cleat;
- sketching how a baluster is fixed to the tread of concrete stair;
- stating three factors that affect the workability of fresh concrete.
To overcome these weaknesses:
- students should be given opportunity to visit a construction site at least once in a month;
- teachers should help the candidates by giving them the outlines contents to study;
- they should be given the list of recommended textbooks for reading;
- students should review their past questions and also by giving them assignments in the areas they have weaknesses;
- The teachers should try as much as possible not to skip any part of the syllabus in
grooming the students.
