Question 9
(1 PETER 2: 13-17)
(a) Relate Peter's teaching on submission to authority.
(b) State seven ways a Christian can be a good citizen.
Observation
This question was popular among the candidates. In the (a) Part,, most candidates answered this question from their own sociological perspective by preaching rather than answering the questions as outlined by Peter. The (b) Part, was better answered by the candidates in that they identified the expectation of their civic duties and related these expectations and experiences about civic duties in answering the question.
Most candidates answered this question in preference to question 8 because the rubric demanded that candidate should answer at least one question in Section C. To this end, in the (b) Part, candidates performed above average in this question. In the (a) Part, candidates used their initiative as gathered from their everyday experience in answering this question which slightly differs from what Peter taught.
Candidates should have stated that:
i. Peter makes it clear that a good citizen is he who for the sake of Christ, respects every human authority.
ii. These authorities could be self imposed/supreme/tyrants or elected/delegated institutions.
iii. However, they have been appointed by God to punish offenders and reward those who do right.
iv. By doing the right thing, a good citizen puts to shame the ignorance of foolish men.
v. Christians should live as free men without using their freedom as a pretext for doing evil.
vi. But rather, they should live as servants of God
vii. Peter encouraged Christians to honour all men
viii. Love the brotherhood/neighbour/those in need
ix. They should fear God and keep His commandments
x. In all they should honour/respect those who are in authority
xi. They should also honour the king.
