Question 6
NARRATE THE PARABLE OF THE UNMERCIFUL SERVANT (MATTHEW 18:21-35)
Observation
This question was straightforward and it attracted many candidates. It was noticed that out of the candidates that attempted this question, many of them could not properly narrate the parable as documented in the bible. Candidates were expected to understand the activities that led to the narration of the parable as outlined below;
- Jesus told the story of the Unmerciful Servant in response to Peter’s question on how often
one should show forgiveness to his/her neighbour.
- Peter asked Jesus if it was seven times one should forgive his brother’s sin.
- Jesus replied, not seven times but seventy times seven
- To illustrate this, Jesus narrated a parable of a king who wanted to settle his account with his servants.
- In his records, one of his servants owed him ten thousand talents.
- Since he couldn’t pay, the king ordered him and his family to be sold so as to pay his debt.
- The servant pleaded for patience and promised to pay everything he owed.
- Out of pity, the king released him and cancelled his debt.
- On his way out, the servant met his fellow servant/colleague who was owing him a hundred denarii.
- This servant seized his colleague’s throat and asked him to pay his money.
- His colleague pleaded with him for patience but he refused and put him in prison.
- Other servants who witnessed this incident were unhappy and reported to the king.
- The king summoned him and asked why he could not forgive his colleague just as he was forgiven.
- In anger, the king ordered him to be jailed until he paid all his debts.
- Jesus compared this punishment to everyone who refused to forgive his brother from his heart.
