Christian Religious Studies Paper 2 WASSCE (PC), 2017

Question 7

THE DEATH OF ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA (ACTS 5:1-11)

Observation

This question was quite popular among the candidates and those who attempted it showed a good mastery of this passage and their performance was above average. However, some students did not have detailed knowledge of the passage as some blames peter for the death of the couples while some other blamed Sapphira for advising Ananias to keep some of the proceeds from the sales.  Expected points candidates needed to have pointed out are;

  1. The early Christians had a communal living such that they shared their possessions among themselves.
  2. Believers who had lands and houses sold them and brought the proceeds to the apostles to support the needy.
  3. Barnabas also sold his field and brought the proceeds to the apostles.
  4. Ananias and his wife Sapphira also sold a piece of property, but kept back some of the proceeds
  5. They brought only a part of the money to the church and gave it to the disciples.
  6. Peter confronted Ananias as to why he allowed Satan to mislead him into lying to the Holy Spirit.
  7. He told him that the land and the proceeds were theirs and they were free to handle them the way they wished.
  8. However, by saying they handed over the entire proceeds, they had not lied to man but to God.
  9. When Ananias heard these castigations, he fell down and died.
  10. Those who witnessed this incident were filled with fear
  11. The young men present carried his corpse away to bury it.
  12. About three hours later, Sapphira came in; unaware of what had happened to her husband
  13. Peter questioned her as to how much she and her husband sold the land.
  14. But she gave the figure she and her husband had earlier agreed upon.
  15. Peter confronted her also as to why she collaborated with her husband and lied to the Holy Spirit
  16. He told her to listen to the approaching steps of those who had gone to bury her husband
  17. Immediately, she fell down and died;
  18. And the men took her out to bury her beside her husband.
  19. Great fear came upon the church and upon all who heard about the incident.
