(A) Describe how the twelve disciples were called.
(B) In what three ways was the call relevant to society?
Observation
This was a popular question as many candidates were attracted to it and they performed well in both the A and B Part. They gave relevant points to the demands of the question. However, In A Part, the challenge most candidates had was they wrote only about the call of the first four disciples rather than focusing their attention on the entire twelve. Points expected of candidates are highlighted below;
The call of the twelve disciples (Matt 1:18-22; Mark 1:16-20; 2: 13-14; Luke 5:1-11)- Matthew and Mark recorded that Jesus called his first two disciples by the lake of Galilee.
- Luke recorded that the call took place by the lake of Genesaret.
- The call was in different stages until all the twelve were assembled.
- All the twelve disciples were of different trade or vocation.
- James and John were mending their nets when they heard the call.
- Matthew, a tax collector was called at his tax office in Capernaum.
- Peter and Andrews, also fishermen were called by the sea of Galilee
- Jesus asked them to put out into the sea and let down their net.
- Peter was reluctant in obeying the Jesus’ command.
- However, he obeyed and had a great catch
- They beckoned their colleagues who helped them dragged out the catch
- Jesus asked them to follow him for he would make them fishers of men.
- Others were later on added to make up the twelve disciples of Jesus.
- They included James the son of Alphaeus, Philip, Thomas, Thaddaeus, Bartholomew, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot
- Love their neighbours
- Forsake the world
- Live holy lives
- Witness about Christ
