CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES AND SUGGESTED REMEDIES
The candidates weaknesses associated with performance include:
- wrong units /omission of units;
- lack of adherence to instructions;
- inability to deduce inference from observation;
- poor mathematical skills;
- inability to express numerical answers in appropriate number of
significant figures;
- - poor understanding of the demand of the questions;
- - inability to write a balanced reaction equation;
- - inability to write correct formula of cations and anions;
- - poor knowledge of redox reaction;
- - spelling mistakes;
- - IUPAC name.
The following remedies were however suggested. Candidates should:
- be exposed early to practical skills;
- improve on their qualitative analysis skills;
- learn IUPAC names;
- learn to read and adhere strictly to rubrics.
Teachers should :
- be exposed to seminars and workshops to improve their teaching skills;
- be motivated;
- be familiar with the exam syllabus;
