Question 2
-
Define resist.
(b) List any three tie-dye methods.
(c) Highlight any five steps to achieve resist in tie -dye.
Observation
Most candidates attempted the question and the overall performance was excellent. Although, a few of this class of candidates were able to define resist and list tie-dye methods but failed to orderly highlight the steps to achieving resist in tie-dye This made them to loose some marks. They were expected to respond to the question thus:
(a) Definition of resist
It is a method/technique of forming/creating patterns/designs to prevent the absorption/penetration of dyes by tying, stitching, waxing or starching some areas/portions of a fabric before dyeing.
(b) (i) Tie-dye methods:
Marbling/Squeezing/Crumpling; Folding; Stitching/Sewing; Pleating; Knotting/Tied cycles; Clamping; Splashing; Spraying; Twisting/Spiral; Clump tying; Bunching; Concentric squares; Concentric circles; Bolting/Sandwiching/
Criss – crossing.
(ii) Steps to achieve resist in tie-dye:
- Get all materials/tools ready such as fabric, dyes, chemicals, tying materials (e.g. strings, raffia, twine), bowls, etc.
- Plan the design on the fabric and resist some areas by any suitable tying technique/method.
- Prepare the dye bath by the mixture of dyes, caustic soda and hydrosulphite.
- Dip the tied fabric in the dye solution and leave to absorb dye properly.
- Remove the fabric from the dye solution and spread to oxidize.
- Loose the tied areas and rinse fabric to remove excess dye .
- Starch the fabric.
- Dry the fabric.
- Iron the fabric to achieve a lustrous effect.
- Package the fabric.
