Observation

Despite the popularity of the question among the candidates, candidates’ performance was average. Some candidates failed to use the right parameters in their explanation of colour. This made them to lose some marks. They were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:

(a)             Colour:
It is a sensation produced in the eyes by the rays of decomposed/separated/
fragmented light which is processed and used as a hue/ink/pigment for design in order  to add beauty to a material or surface.
(b)             Classes of colour:
(i)         Complementary: They are colours directly opposite each other in the colour wheel. Examples, red is complementary to green; purple is complementary to yellow and orange is complementary to blue.
(ii)        Triads: They are three colours that are at equal distance in the colour wheel. Examples, red is triad to yellow; orange is triad to green and blue is triad to red.
(iii)       Monochrome: It is the use of a single graded colour to produce a design. It is achieved by the use of white to produce a tint, or black to produce a shade of colour.
(iv)       Tertiary: It is the mixture of a primary and a secondary colour. Examples:
red + green = reddish green;
blue + orange = bluish orange;
yellow + purple = yellowish purple.
(c)                Materials for both printing and batiking:
Fabric/Cloth; Wax; Cardboard/Paper; Drawing paper/Tracing paper; Dye; Foam; Water; Soap/Detergent; Pomade/Petroleum jelly; Cellotape/Masking tape;
Stencil; Chalk/Pencil; Motif; Rag.
