Candidates’ difficulty in the summary test arises from their unfamiliarity with the written word. For them, any word means anything under the sun! To them, any chain of words is a sentence whether it is a phrase, a clause or a meaningless string of unrelated words. Unless candidates understand what the passage says and what the question looks for, they cannot tackle the summary questions successfully. Copying portions of the set passage verbatim without regard to what is asked is far from summary writing. |
