                  the passages and questions. Many candidates wrote a lot for answers  that require one or two lines. Questions on the ‘function’ of clauses and  phrases demand precision. It is not enough to say ‘it modifies the verb’ or ‘a  verb’. The verb modified must be stated; otherwise, the answer has no merit. 
The vocabulary test  (6(h) and 7(h)) looks for synonyms that can replace the set word perfectly in  the passage. Thus, if a verb is set, the suggested synonym must be a verb. If  the set verb is in the past tense, the suggested replacement must be in the  past. Other parts of speech are treated in the same way.  |
