Observation

The candidates were required to read the passage which was within their range and on a contemporary topic. The responses of candidates, however, were not impressive.  Despite the simple, straightforward summary passage, many candidates were still unable to summarize properly. However, candidates’ inability to identify topic sentences and poor vocabulary affected their responses. Some candidates copied copiously from the passage. Also, many candidates centred their answers to 7(a) on what they felt the television and the Internet was doing to the children and overlooked the requirement of the question which is “the excessive use of television and the Internet” and its effect on children. For question 7(b), many candidates gave their own views and did not answer from the text.
