Candidates were unable to:
- define culture fisheries;
- explain the attributes of a culturable fish species;
- list the types of fish ponds;
- state the methods of lime application in a fish pond;
- state the functions of the components of a fish pond;
- describe management systems in aquaculture;
- state the optimum ranges for water parameters in a fish pond;
- define feeding frequency;
- describe feeding methods in aquaculture;
- describe the activities involved in earthen pond construction;
- explain pond maintenance activities;
- define fish stocking; and
- state the steps involved in artificial breeding of fish.
Consequent on the identified weaknesses observable in the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners made the following recommendations:
- Only competent graduates of Fisheries should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;
- Fisheries should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions etc; and
- Adequate facilities and textbooks on Fisheries should be made available to enhance the teaching – learning of Fisheries in Senior Secondary Schools.
