Observation

This question was not popular among the candidates as majority of the candidates did not respond to it.

In part (a), majority of the candidates could not name four facilities that could be found at fish landing sites.

In part (b), majority of the candidates could not differentiate between a fishing craft and a fishing tool. They provided answers for fishing tool instead of fishing craft.

In part (c), majority of the candidates could not mention four types of fishing crafts.

The expected answers include:

(a)       (i)        Facilities found at fish landing sites

-           winch
-           cold store
-           ice plant
-           dry dock
-           jetty
-           slipway
-           fuel station
-           breakwater

(ii)       Activities carried out at fish landing sites

-           loading of ice onto vessels
-           fuelling of vessels
-           beaching of vessels / berthing vessels
-           offloading of fish from vessels
-           fish marketing
-           repair and maintenance of vessels
-           repair and maintenance of gear
-           fish processing
-           fish storage

(iii)      Sanitation practices carried out at fish landing sites

-           proper disposal of waste
-           oil spills should be cleaned to avoid contamination of fish
-           used / discarded vessel parts should be properly disposed off
-           water should be available at processing sites for proper clean up
-           washing of gear
-           washing of vessels

(b)       (i)        Accessories of a fishing craft
-           oars/ paddles
-           winches
-           sails
-           radar
-           sonar
-           outboard and inboard engine

   (ii)       Description of use of accessories

  Oars / Paddles: - it is used to propel canoes
Winches: - it is used to haul nets onto vessels
Sails: - it enables vessels to move when oriented properly and it is blown by wind
Sonar: - it enables schools of fish to be located by way of sound
Outboard and inboard engine:- it provides power to enable vessels move in the desired direction and speed
Radar: it makes detection of fish easier and prevents fishing craft from bumping into objects.

-           planked/ wooden canoe/canoe
-           dinghy
-           trawler
-           purse seiner
-           long liner
