(a)Give reasons why foods are cooked before eating.

(b) the importance of water in the diet

(c) List the source of water in diets

 

OBSERVATION

Question 6 required candidates to give reasons why foods are cooked before eating in (a), importance of water in the diet in (b) and in (c), they were to list the sources of water in the diet. These questions were well attempted and one of candidates’ strength, they were able to give reasons such as to make it attractive/ improve appearance, to make it palatable, to make it soft / tender, to kill micro-organisms, to make it digestible etc.

 

Also, they stated importance of water in the diet as follows:

  • Aids digestion of food.
  • Regulates body temperature.
  • Transport substances from one part of the body to another.
  • Keeps the membrane lining of organs moist.
  • Reduces friction between joints.
  • Assists in the excretion of waste products.
  • Makes food moist.
  • Compensates for the loss of fluid in the diet.
  • Aids absorption of food.

Furthermore, candidates answered questioned 6 (c) correctly by providing answers such as drinking water, fruit juices, carbonated drinks, fruits, beverages, fruit drinks and soups.
