This question were answered by a few candidates and those who answered it did justice to the question. Such candidates were able to list the types of delta namely arcuate, bird’s foot, cuspate and lacustrine deltas. Most of the candidates that answered the question were able to explain favourable conditions for the formation of delta such as:
- the predominance of active vertical and lateral erosion in the upper course of a river leading to the generation of sedimentary deposits;
- sedimentary deposits are conveyed downstream via the water of the stream;
- the existence of tideless coast which ensures sedimentary deposits are not swept to the bottom of oceans and seas;
- shallowness of the sea that ensures sediments are not packed to depth far beneath the surface;
- absence of lake in river course which could swallow up sediments before its arrival at the coast;
- net deposition of sedimentary load at coast as against transportation of load into the ocean floor. |
