This question was attempted by many of the candidates. Their performance in the (a) aspect of the question that required map work was poor. Adequate practice of drawing and location of features on maps will solve this anomaly. The candidates also performed poorly in the question that required them to describe the location and the size of Nigeria. Their required responses were:
Location of Nigeria
- located in a fairly central position in Africa;
- extends from longitude 3oE to 15oE;
- extends from latitude 4oN to 14oN;
- bordered by Cameroon Republic to the east;
- bordered by Chad Republic to the Northeast;
- bordered by Benin Republic to the West;
- bordered by Niger Republic to the North;
- bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the South;
- marks the eastern border of West Africa;
- latitudinal extent is 10o;
- longitudinal extent is 12o.
The question on economic importance of highlands to the economy of Nigeria was properly handled by most of the candidates. They were able to highlight the economic importance of highlands to Nigeria like:
- agricultural activities like transhumance, apple growing, e.t.c.;
- source of minerals;
- tourism;
- hunting;
- game;
- animal grazing;
- sites for masts;
- rocks for construction;
- hydrological centres;
- for defence;
- as wind breaks.
