Geography Paper 2 WASSCE (PC 2ND), 2018

Weaknesses/Remedies

SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
The following weaknesses were found in the candidates’ scripts:

  1. Reading the question to the point of understanding before attempting them: It is expected that candidates would read the questions to the point of understanding and see if they have adequate facts to answer the question before attempting them. This will enable them to secure better marks.

  2. Poor map outlines: Many candidates drew maps with poor outlines. This was because they did not spend time to adequately practise how to draw maps and locate geographical features across the topics in the syllabus. Adequate practise will facilitate good performance that will lead to higher marks.

  3. Scanty explanation of points: Some candidates just presented sketchy answers to questions which led to loss of precious marks. Most questions require explanations. Such questions requiring explanations are usually asked using verbs like outline, describe, explain, highlight, state etc.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES FOR OVERCOMING CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
The following are suggested measures to improve candidates weaknesses:

  1. Adequate understanding of questions before attempting them: It is expected that the candidates read through the question paper and choose only questions that they can adequately answer. This will lead them to scoring high marks in examinations.

  2. Learning how to draw map outlines: Candidates are expected to practise how to draw map outlines and how to locate geographical features at the precise locations. Mastery could only be achieved through practising as there is no other short cut to it.

  3. Adequate explanation of points: Candidates will be required to explain their point in order to secure full marks in most of the questions. Candidates should practise how to answer questions correctly by using past question papers and past model answers.
