Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. Majority of candidates were able to state at least two points in it. Some however were stating functions of skeletons/bones.

The expected answers are as follows: 

Functions of cartilage

• It prevents friction between bones/prevents bone damage;
• The cartilage of the ribs allows contraction and expansion of the thorax/ it enhances breathing mechanism
• It keeps the trachea open/the cartilage of the nose also keeps the nostrils open for intake of fresh air;
• The ear cartilage keeps the pinna erect;
• It forms cushion in the sockets of bones;
• It absorbs shock between bones;
• Forms structural component of organs/named;
• Provides surface for muscle attachment
