Question 3
- The diagram below illustrates the alimentary canal and its associated organs in humans.
.
Study it carefully and answer questions 3(a), 3(b) and 3(c).
- (i) Name the parts labelled I,II,III,IV,V and VI [3 marks]
(ii) State two functions each of the parts labelled III and VI. [4 marks]
.
- Describe the shape of the parts labelled:
- IV; [1 mark]
- V. [1 mark]
(c) State the significance of the shape described in 2(b)(ii) [1 mark]
Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a)(i) few candidates correctly named the parts labelled I,II,III,IV and VI and in (a)(ii) candidates could not correctly state functions each of the parts labelled III and VI of the alimentary canal and it associated organs in humans. In part (b) candidates could not describe the shape of the parts labeled Iv and V in the alimentary and its associated organs. In part (c) candidates could not correctly state the significance of the shape duodenum and ileum/small intestine of the alimentary
canal.
However, the expected answers are as follows:
3 (a) (i) NAME OF THE PARTS LABELLED
I - oesophagus / gullet
II - stomach
III - pancreas
IV - duodenum
V - ileum / small intestine
VI - gall bladder
(ii) FUNCTIONS OF PART LABELLED III
- secretes pancreatic juice / enzyme/named
- secretes hormone / insulin / glucagon
FUNCTIONS OF PART LABELLED VI
- stores bile
- drains the bile into duodenum
(b) (i) THE SHAPE OF IV
- u – shape /curved/loop shape
(ii) THE SHAPE OF V
- coiled / long shape
(c) SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SHAPE DESCRIBED IN B (II)
- coiled nature, provides large surface area for digestion and absorption of food
