Observation

Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was fair. In part (a)(i) they did fairly well. In part (a) (ii) majority of the candidates could not describe how movement is brought about at the elbow joint. In part (b) they did well in it.
The expected answers are as follow:

6 (a) (i) EXPLANATION OF MUSCLES

• muscles are specialized tissues
• that contract and relax
•  bringing about movement of the body/parts of the body

    (ii)   DESCRIPTION OF MOVEMENT AT THE ELBOW JOINT
-     the biceps muscle contracts and pulls on the radius
-     triceps muscle relaxes
-     causing the lower arm to bend/flex
-     the triceps muscle contracts and pulls on the ulna
-     the biceps muscle relaxes
-     causing the lower arm to straighten/extend

(b)      FUNCTIONS OF THE MUSCLES
-     movement
-     attachment
-     protection of bone/organs
