What steps did the British take to stop slave trade in Nigeria?

This was a very popular question. Although many derailed, a good
number were able to give relevant points and were rewarded with high
marks. They were able to explain the following points among others;
- the British Parliament abolished the slave trade in 1807 and made it illegal;
- the British press exposed the evils of the trade;
- many slave ships were captured and liberated slaves sent back to Sierra Leone and The Gambia;
- the British paid compensations, and made treaties with participating nations to solicit their co-operation;
Britain made treaties with chiefs who supplied the slaves; etc.
