Outline any five roles played by traditional rulers during the colonial rule in the 20th century.
Observation
This was also a popular question and was fairly answered by the candidates. Most candidates who answered this question understood its demand but many of them only listed the relevant points and score low marks while few of the candidates discussed the roles of chiefs in the indirect rule system.
The following points were expected to be mentioned by candidates to get good mark:
(i) Traditional rulers took an active oath in revenue generation on behalf of the colonial government.
(ii) They serve as mouth-piece of their subjects to the colonial government.
(iii) They ensured the enforcement and observance of laws and bye-laws enacted by the colonial government.
(iv) They were arbitrators of matters that affected their communities at the local level.
(v) They represented their subjects in the committees organized by the colonial government.
