Observation
Many candidates did not know the importance of oracles in the lives of pre-colonial Nigeria. The few that knew the importance did not take note of the period in history. Those who attempted it performed poorly. Specifically, the candidates were expected to identify the following points.

(i) The Oracle served and spiritual guidance for the people.
(ii) They were regarded as gods.
(iii) They were usually consulted on special occasions.
(iv) They provided protection for the people.
(v) They were to bring good fortune to the people.
(vi) They were consulted for settlement of disputes.
(vii) They meted out punishment on offenders.
(viii) They were sometimes consulted for special powers.
(ix) They served as a moral check on the people.
