- The Beginning family: - This family starts from marriage and ends with the arrival of the first child. It is period of establishment. The couple learns to know each other better and sets family goals.
- The Expanding family: - This stage covers a longer period of than the beginning family. It starts period than the birth of the first child and ends when the last child leaves home. Here, the families learn to take on new responsibilities and they provide the children with nutritious food good clothing, shelter and education.
- The Contracting family: - This stage beings when all the children have left home and become self-supporting.
