Question 2

    1. Discuss the significance of the year 622 C.E. in history of Islam.


Observation

This was a fairly popular question.  Only a few of the candidates got it right while a large number of them could not establish or comprehend the significance of the year 622 in Islamic history. Instead of writing on the good things that happened to the Muslims at Madinah in the anal of Islam regarding the institutionalization of major pillars and acts of worship in Islam, they were writing on the difficulties encountered by the Prophet and early believers in Islam. To get good mark, candidates were expected to mention the following points:

  1. The year 622 C.E. was the year Prophet (S.A.W.) migrated from Makkah to Yathrib.
  2. It was after he had received divine directive and assurance of safety from the Yathribites.
  3. The year 622 C.E. marked the end of the Makkan period and the beginning of the Madinan era.
  4. The City of Yathribite was renamed the City of the Prophet (Madinatun-Nabiyyi)
  5. It facilitated the expansion of Islam beyond Makkah.
  6. The Hijrah gave birth to the first mosque (Masjid an-Nabawiyyi)
  7. The first Headquarters of Islam was established upon the Prophet’s arrival in Yathrib.
  8. Consequent upon the above, Islam became a state religion (Ummah).
  9. The Hijrah prepared enough grounds for the institutionalization of major acts of worship such as alat, Sawm, Zakāt and Hajj.
  10. The Hijrah made it possible for Muslims to worship openly without hindrance.
  11. The Prophet was accorded recognition not only as religious authority but also as a Statesman.
  12. It established bonds of brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar (Ukhuwwah).
  13. The year marked a turning point in history of Islam and Muslims.
  14. The Hijrah led to the promulgation of the Madinan document (constitution)
  15. The constitution brought about peace and stability between the Muslims and non- Muslims.
  16. The Islamic calendar has its origin traced to the year 622 C.E.
  17. The migration paved way for the conquest of Makkah in 630 C.E.
