(b) Explain the functions of each of the parts listed in 4(a).
Observation
This question was very popular among candidates, most of who scored above average marks. The question required candidates to mention the parts of a sewing machine and explain the functions of the parts listed in the (a) and (b) parts of the question respectively.

(b) (i) Needle.
- It is meant to stitch leather components.
(ii) Presser foot lever.
- It controls the movement of the presser foot.
(iii) Reverse sewing lever.
- It helps to sew backwards.
(iv) Stitch length dial.
- It helps in changing the length of stitches.
(v) Stitch selector.
- It allows choosing the stitch type to use when sewing.
(vi) Hand wheel.
- It allows the manual movement of the needle.
- It helps in starting up the manual operation of the sewing machine and it is also the same part that helps to stop or disengage the operational movement in the sewing machine.
(vii) Bobbin winder.
- It is the peg or metal part which propels the bobbin as the thread on it is wound.
(viii) Spool pins.
- This is a metal rod attached to the top of the machine which holds the spool of the thread.
(ix) Foot pedal.
- It is a metal part that aids both the movement and the sewing speed.
(x) Pressure regulator.
- It controls the pressure of the presser foot on the leather during sewing.
(xi) Thread guide.
- It is used to position the thread from the spool to the needle.
(xii) Tension control/disk.
- It helps in adjusting (controlling) the looseness or tightness of the stitches as the sewing goes.
(xiii) Shuttle cover.
- It is a spool holding the button thread inside the sewing machine.
(xiv) Bobbin case.
- It encloses the bobbin.
(xv) Bobbin.
- It is a small spindle used to wind the thread.
(xvi) Feed dog.
- It moves the fabric or leather forward during stitching.
(xvii) Thread take up lever.
- It moves the thread from the spool or controls the running of the thread in the machine.
(xviii) Shuttle.
- Catches the top thread for stitching.
(xix) Throat plate.
- It is a flat metal that protects or covers the inside of the sewing machine.
(xx) Needle clamp/holder.
- It is used to hold the needle.
