(a) Mention any three factors to be considered when selecting a handle for a leather bag.
(b) Outline in sequential order the six steps involved in rivet setting.
This question was quite popular among the candidates, majority of whom scored average marks. Some of the candidates were able to provide the relevant factors considered when selecting a handle for bags in the (a) part of the question; they however did not perform well in the (b) part, majority of the candidates who were able to provide the relevant points did not present them in the right sequence.
Candidates were expected to answer thus to obtain maximum marks:
(a) (i)The size of the bag;
(ii) The weight of the bag;
(iii) Fashion;
(iv) Cost of the handle;
(v) The usage of the bag;
(vi) Durability/quality of the handle.
(b) (i) Locate and mark the correct area that the rivet post would be set on the leather;
(ii) Punch the hole with the appropriate tool;
(iii) Insert the post through two or more layers of the leather pieces to be riveted;
(iv) Place the rivet and the leather piece on a hard surface;
(v) Place the cap on the post;
(vi) Hit the cap with a hammer/mallet one or more times until it is firmly coupled.
