Question 2
DELE CHARLEY: The Blood of a Stranger
Analyse the play as a conflict between European culture and African tradition.
Observation
This was a popular question. However, many candidates gave mere narrations of the European and African culture without identifying areas of conflict.
The required answers should include:
- The conflict in the play brought out the collision of the African and European cultures.
- This collusion was facilitated by Maligu, Soko and Parker
- The negative influences of the European culture as manifested by Whitehead’s disrespect of Mandoland tradition; his attempted rape of Wara and introduction of drugs and alcohol to the people of Mandoland.
Candidates’ performance in the question was poor.
