Question 9
DTo what extent does the diction portray reconciliation in Kofi Awoonori's "The Anvil and the Hammer"?
Observation
Many candidates attempted this question. However, candidates could not show how diction portrays reconciliation in the poem
Candidates were expected to discuss the following points:
- References to “the anvil”, “hammer” and “forge”- images of smithing.
- The suggestion that the new culture is "laced on", therefore there is no fusion.
- The longing for the old traditional culture in the expression, "sew the old days for us".
- The realisation that the accommodation has been painful.
Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
