Question 5
LORRAINE HANSBERRY: A Raisin in the Sun
What is the significance of Karl Lindner’s visits to the Youngers?
Observation
Few candidates attempted this question. Their responses showed they did not have a good knowledge of the text. They concentrated on Karl Lindner’s profile and his second visit to the Youngers. They were unable to mention the importance and significance of his visits to the Youngers in which he tries to persuade them not to buy a house in the White neighbourhood.
Candidates’ response should include:
* Lindner visits the Youngers twice the same day to ask them to sell their house.
* The first visit- he meets Walter and the Younger women.
* Walter rejects the offer.
* Walter calls Lindner to come seal the deal, but rejects it finally as a mature man.
* The visits show that Blacks are not wanted by Whites as neighbours.
* They also reveal the tenacity of a proud black family.
Candidates’ performance in this question was poor.
