A good number of candidates attempted this question. Most of the candidates seemed to have a good knowledge of the poem, hence they were able to support the definition of rhetorical question with direct quotes from the poem. However, they failed to state the effects of the appeals on the poet.

Candidates were expected to discuss the following points:

• Statement of the theme.


• Definition of “rhetorical question” as the question asked.


• Appeal to the senses.


• Appeal to emotion.


• General effects of the various appeals.

Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
