Question 1
DELE CHARLEY: The Blood of a Stranger
Compare Kindo and his father in the play.
Observation
This was a popular question. Most of the candidates answered only one side of the question: they talked about only the similarities between Kindo and his father; they did not point out their differences.
The required answers should include:
- The statement of the central themes of colonial exploitation, deception and greed.
- The identification of the characters.
- Their attitude to culture and foreign influence.
- Their roles in the play; similarities and differences.
- The climax: Kindo’s confrontation with Whitehead and his subsequent banishment by Santigi.
Candidates’ performance was fair.
