Question 5

    (a) State any five differences between analogue and digital cameras.

    (b) List any five ways of caring for a camera.

Observation

A practical oriented and technical question which was attempted by many. Candidates that attempted the question performed below average. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers in order to score good marks:

(a)        Differences between analogue and digital cameras
-    A digital camera stores its images in the memory card, while the analogue uses film.
-    Photographs taken by digital camera can be reviewed after exposure, while this is
     not possible in analogue camera.
-     Digital camera allows for in-camera editing, while this is not possible in analogue.
            -     Digital camera allows for preview of the picture to be taken through the
LCD/Viewfinder, while it can only be done through the viewfinder in an analogue camera.

  • The digital camera possesses an LCD, which allows for accessing of the functions

of the camera/menu, this is not available in analogue.

  • Images in analogue camera are recorded on films, while the sensor converts light

to digital images in digital camera.

  • Digital camera cannot operate without batteries unlike analogue camera that can                function with or without batteries depending on the make.
  • Direct printing from a digital camera is possible which is not so in analogue camera.
  • Several exposures of digital images can be stored in the memory card at a time depending on the capacity of the card, while the maximum storage in an analogue film is 36 exposures.
  • Digital cameras do not have any opening at the back while the back of the analogue camera is designed to open for film loading.
  • Some digital cameras came with video recording facility which is not available in analogue cameras.
  • Image deletion is possible with digital camera but impossible with analogue camera.
  • Image captured on an analogue camera cannot be transferred to other devices while digital images can easily be transferred to other devices.

(b)    Ways of caring for a camera
-     Keep the camera in a bag when not in use.
-     Use a soft cloth to clean camera when dusty.
-     Always replace the lens cap when the camera is not in use.
-     Do not expose the lens of the camera to direct sunlight.
-     Keep the camera in a dry, cool place.
-     Keep the camera from being hit by external objects.
-     Do not handle the camera violently.
-     Always hang the camera on the neck with its strap when in use.
-     Keep the camera away from liquids.
-     Remove battery from the camera when it will not be used for up to 3 months.
-     Avoid touching the camera lens with bare hands.
