Observation

TThis question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a) candidates correctly state ways in which badminton and tennis games are different. In part (b)(i) many candidates could not correctly name the types of game arrangements possible in table tennis game and in (b)(ii) many  candidates correctly list equipment in table tennis game. In part (c) many candidates could not correctly state instances when it is a service fault in badminton game.  In part (d) many candidates could not correctly explain the procedure for service in doubles table tennis game.
The expected answers were as follows:
7(a)      DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BADMINTON AND TENNIS GAMES

    • the height of badminton net is higher than that of the tennis
    • court dimensions are different in both games
    • different scoring systems are used in both games
    • badminton is indoor while tennis is outdoor
    • shuttlecock is used in badminton while ball is used in tennis
    • underhand service is used in badminton while overhead service is used in tennis
    • the racket used in badminton is smaller than that of tennis

  (b)(i)  TYPES OF GAMES ARRANGEMENT POSSIBLE IN TABLE TENNIS GAME

  • singles

  (c)      INSTANCES WHEN A SERVICE IS FAULTY IN BADMINTON GAME

            It is a service fault if the

  • service is not diagonal over the net to the receiver’s court
  • service is not underhand
  • player plays the shuttlecock round the outside of the net into the court
  • shuttlecock  crosses over the net but lands in the wrong court
  • player misses the shuttlecock completely in an attempt to serve
  • shuttlecock does not cross over the net/explained
  • shuttlecock is hit twice before crossing the net
  • player strikes the shuttlecock above the waist level

  (d)     PROCEDURE FOR SERVICE IN A DOUBLES TABLE TENNIS GAME

  • the first partner serves the ball
  • the ball is served next by the opponent who received the first/last service
  • the third round of service is delivered by the partner of the first server
