Observation

ThiThis question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good.  In part (a) many candidates correctly name races in which athletes maintain their lanes throughout.  In (b) many candidates also correctly state rules of javelin throw.  In part (c) candidates could not state features of the set position in athletics.  In part (d) many candidates correctly explain relay race and lane in athletics.
The expected answers were as follows:
3(a)      RACES IN WHICH ATHLETES MAINTAIN THEIR LANE THROUGHOUT

  • 100m
  • 200m
  • 400m
  • 4 x 100m relay race
  • 100m hurdles
  • 110m hurdles
  • 400m hurdles

  (b)      RULES OF JAVELIN THROW

  • the javelin must be held at the grip with one hand only
  • it must be thrown over the upper part of the shoulder of the throwing arm
  • the javelin must not be slung or hurled
    • at no time after preparing to throw and until after the javelin is released is the  thrower permitted to turn his back to the landing area
  • the thrower must not leave the runway until missile has landed
  • the thrower must not cross the scratch line or its extension at release
  • for a throw to be valid, the missile must make a mark on the grand

with the tip first.

  • the thrower is placed by the best of six trials.

 

 

 (c)       FEATURES OF THE SET POSITION IN ATHLETICS
            -           knees are lifted off the ground

  • hips raised
  • knees slightly flexed

-           head slightly dropped with eyes focused a few metres ahead

  • hands/fingers behind the scratch/starting line
  • athlete remain motionless

 (d)      EXPLANATION OF THE FOLLOWING IN ATHLETICS
            (i)         RELAY RACE

  • This is a team race
  • run by four athletes/quartet
  • an athlete runs one out of four legs/distances
  • involves handling over baton from one athlete to the other in designated areas
  • the race is finished with a baton in hand of the last runner/anchorman                                                                                            

(ii)        LANE

    • A path marked on the track in which an athlete runs during a race
    • An area of the running track demarcated by two lines which measures 1.22 wide.
