This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. In part (a) few
candidates wrongly identified dislocation with muscles instead of bones and joints. In part (b) few
candidates went off the track by writing vomiting, fracture, headache sprain as signs of dislocation. In
part (c) also few candidates gave wrong answers such as washing wound with iodine, pulling back bone
to its original position, rubbing elbow with balm as the procedure for administering First Aid to a
dislocated elbow joint.
The expected answers were as follows:
9(a) Dislocation
- Dislocation is displacement of one or more bones at ajoint.
(b) Signs of dislocation
- pain at tbe joint
- loss of power/fixity of joint
- swelling
- deformity/abnormal appearance/redness/discolouration
- tendernesslbruising
(c) Procedure for Administering First Aid to a dislocation elbow joint
- support the part/joint in the most comfortable position
- apply a splint and extra padding where necessary to avoid strain
- use slings to supply support
- immobilize the dislocated area
- apply cold compress to reduce pain and prevent swelling
- do not attempt to replace the displaced bones
- take victim to the hospital.
