This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a) only few candidates were on the right track while many candidates missed the track and wrote finishing up races earlier than colleagues, winner of tournament as what is bye in a tournament. In part (b) very few candidates understood seeding in a tournament therefore, majority missed their way and wrote scoring a goal, penalizing an athlete who beats gun for false start and acknowledge cheers by spectators for good display of skills as difference between bye and seeding in a tournament.
However, the expected answers were as follows:
3(a) A BYE
- Is an arrangement where a team/player is exempted from participating when all other teams/players are arranged in pairs
- In the first round of a competition
- only to join in the second/later stages
(b) DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BYE AND SEEDING IN A TOURNAMENT
- in bye any team/player can be exempted in the first round of a competition through balloting
- in seeding strong teams/players are arranged on the tournament chart so that the more skilful teams/players do not meet each other in the first round
