This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair. In part (a) many candidates wrongly referred to physical fitness as total fitness of the physical mental, social and spiritual attributes of individual. In part (b) few candidates did fairly well and majority of them groped in darkness with irrelevant responses such as: it controls the flow of blood. It warms the body and develops physically, it reduces the weight of the body, it makes the brain to function well, and it helps the digestion of food easily. In part (c) many candidates missed the answer. They wrote yam, bread and cassava as end product of carbohydrate, they named beans, egg and meat as end product of protein, fish and meat as end product of fat.
However, the expected answers were as follows:
6(a) PHYSICAL FITNESS
The ability/capacity of an individual to carry out/perform daily activities efficiently without undue fatigue and still having extra energy to attend to emergencies.
(b) EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
- increase in stroke volume/amount of blood pumped per beat
- increase in cardiac out put/amount of blood pumped out per minutes
- increase in strength of heart
- heart is less fatigue more enduring during vigorous exercise
- decrease in heart rate
- increase in size of heart
- cardio-respiratory endurance is enhanced
- muscular wall is further thickened
(c) END PRODUCTS OF THE DIGESTION OF:
Carbohydrate - glucose
Protein - amino acids
Fat - fatty acid and glycerol
