Question 2
(2) (a) State two safety precautions to be observed in each of the following activities:
(i) movement of cylinders;
(ii) storage of cylinders.
(b) Explain the term pipe jointing as used in plumbing works.
(c) List three factors to be considered in selecting pipe jointing method in plumbing.
Observation
Most of the candidates were able to provide the right responses to 2 (a) and (b) but could not give correct responses to 2 (c). The required responses are as follows.
2(a) (i) Movement of cylinder
- Fit suitable protection valve caps and lever to cylinders when transporting.
- Securely stow gas cylinders to protect them from moving or falling
- Do not let cylinder project beyond the side or end of fork lift trucks.
- Disconnect regulators and hose from cylinders
- Ensure gas cylinder are clearly marked to show their content
- Cylinder should be stored in a well ventilated area.
- Keep full and empty cylinder away from each other.
(ii) Storage precautions for cylinders
- Store gas cylinders in a dry, safe, flat, open space.
- Store cylinders where they are not vulnerable to hazards as a result of impact.
- Gas cylinder containing flammable gas should not be stored in part of a building used for other purposes.
- Protect cylinders from external heat sources that may adversely affect their mechanical integrity.
- Secure the cylinder in a vertical position.
(b) (i) Pipe jointing is the process of connecting pipes that ensures tight sealing
and straightness.
OR Pipe Joining is a means of joining one or more pipes together by using a fitting or welded joints.
(c) Factors to be considered in selecting pipe jointing method are
- type of pipe (the material i.e. mild steel, pvc, copper, etc);
- type of joint to be made;
- the service environment (where it will be used);
- Comparative cost.
