- Explain graphic art.
- Write notes on any three of the following:
(i) Lithography;
(ii) Serigraphy;
(iii) Illustration;
(iv) Poster;
Observation
This question attracted few of the candidates and some of these candidates performed fairly well, while others performed unsatisfactorily. There were inadequate responses in most cases and these made the candidates to lose some obtainable marks. Candidates should have given some of the following responses to the question:
(a) - it is the art of creating visual communication that combines images and texts to convey information to an audience, especially to produce a specific effect.
- it is a component of applied arts, which deals with creating two-dimensional forms for reproduction by a printing process, usually for dissemination of information.
- it usually integrates pictures (illustration or photography) with texts.
- it is also called commercial art.
- it is mostly used for foster the sale of a product, service or an idea.
- it is an instrument in advertising, packaging, publishing, cinema and television. etc.
- it involves printing processes, such as etching, engraving, lithography, photography, serigraphy etc.
(b) (i) Lithography
- it is the process of printing from a flat surface treated so as to repel the ink except where it is required for printing.
- a process of printing developed by Aloys Senefelder, a German, in 1978.
- it is a method of printmaking from a flat surface, usually stone or mural/plastic sheet.
- both printing and non-printing area are flat without relief effect.
- It is rooted in the principle of repulsion of grease and water, (i.e the fact that water and grease do not mix)
- it is a method that involves drawing of images to be printed on the stone/or metal plate/plastic sheet with a brush pen.
- it is another method that involves transferring the image onto a plate by photosensitive process., metal plate or plastic sheet.
- the print so produced is called lithography.
(ii) Serigraphy
- it is a method of creating an image on paper, fabric or some other object by pressing ink through a screen with areas blocked off by a stencil
- it is a printmaking technique also known as screen-printing.
- it involves creating images by forcing ink through a fine synthetic fabric screen unto a surface to be printed with a squeegee.
- a stencil attached to the screen prevents ink from passing where no image is desired.
- it is most appropriate for decorative printing on panels, plastic containers and printed garments.
- it has a distinctive advantage in printing finely detailed images on any surface such as paper, plastic, three-dimensional surface. etc.
- it was developed in the United states of America.
(iii) Illustration - visual representation such as picture, diagram, drawing etc clarify or explain a text story etc
- it could be representation of scene, people, objects related directly or indirectly or symbolically to the text they accompany
- It is mostly used for illuminating stories in books
- It is also used as visual in advertising.
(iv) Poster
- A bill or design for posting in public places - it means mass produced advertisements or usually printed on large sheet of paper, for public display.
- it usually consists of a colourful picture (photography) or illustration. - it comes with a trademark or symbol of identity of the sponsor.
- it is usually created for commercial purposes, to advertise products or services. - it also serves as a means of public enlightenment.
