(a) Write notes on Senufo figures with particular reference to:
(i) country;
(ii) medium.
(b) State any three characteristics of Senufo figures.
(c) State any three functions of Senufo figures.
Observation
The question was attempted by few candidates. The candidates performed averagely in this question. They were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:
(a) Senufo figures
(i) - Cote d’Ivoire/Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso/Upper Volta and Mali.
(ii) - Wood.
(b) Characteristics of Senufo figures
- Highly elongated.
- Pronounced/protruding forehead.
- Some with pointed chin with tapers.
- Female figures have pointed long and narrow breast.
- Female figures are with slim stomach.
- Long and thin arms.
- Arms are usually attached to the thighs.
- Carved in wood.
- Stylized hair dresses with comb.
- Faces are also stylized.
- Finely polished.
- They are usually seated or standing on pedestals.
- Some have facial marks/scarification.
- Short limbs.
(c) Functions of Senufo figures
- They represent ancestral spirit.
- They are used for divination.
- For funeral ceremonies (to remove the spirit of the dead from the house).
- For admission of the initiates.
- For representing horsemen.
- They are used in the cult of twins.
- They enhance the importance of dignitaries’ staff.
