Question 1

  • (a) Study specimens E, F, G and H and answer the following questions

    (i) State three major nutrients supplied to crops by specimen E (NPK 15:15:15).

(ii) List three methods that could be used to apply specimen E on a farm. [6 marks]

  • (b) State three agriculture uses of each of specimens F (Woodash), and G (Limestone).[6 marks]
  • (c) Mention three ways in which specimen H (Cow dung) is important to the soil.[3 marks]

Observation

(a) (i) This question was popular among candidates though few spelt it wrongly. (ii) Application of fertilizer through irrigation was hardly stated by any of the candidates. (b) Most candidates’ response was outside agricultural use of woodash and limestone. (c) Majority of the candidates were able to mention ways in which specimen H (Cow dung) is important to the soil.
The expected answers include:

1(b)Agricultural uses of specimens F(Woodash) and G (Limestone)

specimens F(Woodash)

- Liming material to correct soil acidity

- Sprinkled on crops to control insect pests

- Provides nutrients (Potassium) for crop growth

- Used to correct acidity in fish ponds

- Used in compost making

- Increases growth of phytoplankton in fish pond

- Used in controlling pond algae

- Used to increase the rate of percolation in clay soil

 Specimen G (Limestone)

- Supplies Calcium for crop growth/adds nutrients to the soil

- Added to the soil to improve its structure

- Sued to correct acidity in fish pond water

- Used to reduce turbidity in fish ponds

- Used to reduce soil acidity/Liming material

- Applied to clay to release locked-up nutrients
