Question 1

a) Define the following terms with respect to alternating current
circuits:
(i)inductive reactance;
(ii)capacitive reactance;
(iii)impedance.

From fig. 7, calculate the:

(i) resonant frequency;
(ii) impedance at resonance; (iii) the current I at resonance.

Observation

The expected answers were:
(a)(i) Inductive reactance is defined as the opposition offered to the flow of current in an a.c. circuit by an inductor
(ii) Capacitive reactance is the opposition offered to the flow of current in an a.c. circuit by a capacitor
(iii) Impedance is defined as the total opposition offered to the flow of current in an a.c. circuit

The question was on Alternating Current Circuit Theory. It was quite popular with the candidates.
Many of the candidates who attempted the question got the definition right.
However, the importance of resonance was not well understood due to faulty circuit diagram.
