The Sketch in Figure 2 represents a three speed sliding mesh gearbox in a neutral position.

  1. Identify the parts labelled J, K, L, M and N.
  2. Calculate he first gear ration.
  3. Calculate the reverse gear ration.
  4. List the two types of gear teeth used in a constant mesh gearbox.

Observation

 

This question attracted very few candidates.  The few candidates who attempted it were only able to provide the required response to part (d) of the question.

K      -           Constant mesh gear
L       -           Layshaft or countershaft
M      -           Reverse idler gear or idler gear
