Candidates' Weaknesses and Suggested Remedies

 

The observed weaknesses of the candidates include:

- illegible handwriting;

- failure to identify biological systems and organs associated with the activities performed by humans in the diagrams in question 1;

- poor expression of answers by using the word ‘helps’ instead of stating the function of a structure directly;

- inability to identify the labeled termites in question 2;

- inability to state the correct role of the illustrated termites in the a colony;

- not stating structure and function to the question on adaptation in question 2 (a) (iii);

- inability to state the structural differences between the Queen and Soldier termites;

- inability to identify self-pollination between flowers on the same plant;

- poor spelling of one-word terms;

- inability to name the essential parts of a flower.


The following remedies were proffered to overcome the weaknesses:


Candidates should:
- cover the syllabus before sitting the examinations;

- take the examination only after the completion of the senior secondary school;

- attend coaching lessons to learn more;

- study past questions and Chief Examiner’s Report;

- improve on their spelling of technical terms;

- study often and prepare ahead of exams;

- read textbooks that have enough description of topics rather than Biology key points;

- study questions properly before answering them.
