Question 4

(a)  Sketch the earthwork support to a trench 1500 mm deep in a moderately
    firm soil.

(b)        Label the following parts in 4(a) above:
                  (i)         poling board;
                  (ii)        waling;

  1. struts;
  2. folding wedges.

(c) Describe the method of transporting fresh concrete with a wheel barrow from the point of mixing to a foundation trench located 10,000 mm away.

OBSERVATION

Few candidates were able to:
-           sketch the earthwork support to a trench;
-           describe the method of transporting fresh concrete using a wheel barrow over a long distance.

Majority of them failed to:
-           sketch the earthwork support to a trench;
-           describe the method of transporting fresh concrete using a wheel barrow over a long distance.

The expected response to question 4 is as given below:

4.         (a) & (b)          Earthwork Support in a moderately firm soil

                   (c)             The method of transporting fresh concrete with a wheel barrow
(i)         Lay boards on planks along the path of the barrow from the place of mixing to the point of placing.
                                    (ii)        Wet the internal surfaces of the wheel barrow with water.

  1. Fill the wheel barrow with the concrete.
  2. Wheel the concrete over the boards.
  3. Ensure that the chute is wetted before pouring concrete.
  4. Deposit the concrete into the chute.
  5. Shovel the concrete into the foundation trench.
