(a)        List five walling materials for a domestic building.
(b)        State one advantage each for the use of the following

(i)metal window frames;

(ii)timber window frames.

(iii)fig. 1 shows the sketch of a section through a closed eaved roof. Identify the parts labeled M, N, O, P, Q and R.

Observation

 

Majority of the candidates were able to:

  • list five walling materials for a domestic building
  • state one advantage  each for the use of the following:           
  • metal window frames;
  • timber window frames.

 

However, few of them failed to identify the parts labelled M, N, O, P, Q and R correctly.
The expected response to question 3 is as given below:
3 (a)     List five walling materials for a domestic building:

  • sandcrete block;
  • concrete;
  • clay brick;
  • timber;
  • glass;
  • metal;
  • stones;
  • adobe blocks;
  • lateritic blocks;
  • bamboo;
  • plastic.

                             
(b)       State one advantage each for the use of the following:
(i)   Metal window frames
-     more resistant to weather elements;
-     does not shrink;
-     not affected by dry rot and decay;
-     not attacked by insects;
-     does not spread fire;
-     it is more durable;
-     does not twist or warp;
-     does not absorb moisture. 

(ii) Timber  window frames 
-     ease to work with;
-     does not corrode;
-     can withstand fire if treated;
-     it is not affected by thermal movement;
-     does not transfer heat;

M =  rafter;
N  =  wallplate;
O  =  wall/brickwall;
P   =  eaves boarding;
Q  =  fascia board;
