Building construction Paper 3 May/June 2015

Candidates' Weakness and Suggested Remedies

The following shortcomings were observed:

-           in ability to draw accurately, the semicircular arch;
-           failure to dimension their drawings;
-           incorrect use of conventional symbols.

To overcome these weaknesses, candidates should be well grounded in:

-           geometrical construction of angles, triangles, regular polygons, circles and arcs;

-           proper methods of dimensioning building drawings and exposing the students to real working drawings prepared by professional architects;

-           drawing of conventional symbols used to represent building materials and fittings on plan and in section.

In addition, candidates should be given ample drawing assignments that involve dimensioning and symbols.
