  1. Make the test piece shown below, using timber which has been planed to the following sizes:

Two pieces       -          40 x 65 x 360
One piece        -           40 x 65 x 210.
One piece        -           10 x 20 x 90.
Two pieces      -           37 mm wire nails

Observation

 

STEP 1
Candidates were required to make long mortise and tenon joint for the model of a door frame. Most candidates were able to make the joint correctly. However, some of them could not make the joint correctly as required.
Each candidates workpiece was to have two mortises at the left and right sides of the head of the frame with long  tenon and short tenon at the two jambs of the frame fitted together without splitting.

 

STEP 2
Candidates were required to make rebate at the two jambs and at the head of the frame. Most candidates were able to make rebate at the two jambs and at the head of the frame. However few of them were unable to make it as required.
Each candidate’s workpiece should be rebated at both jambs from the top down to the bottom to give 20mm.

STEP 3
Candidates were required to brace the frame by nailing with two pieces of 37 mm wire nails by the bottom of the door frame. Most candidates were able to brace the frame by nailing it correctly. However few of them were unable to brace the frame completly as required.
Each candidates workpiece was to be braced by nailing the 10 x 20 brace by the bottom of the door frame.

STEP 4
Candidates were required to assemble the workpiece correctly and clean up. Most candidates were able to assemble their final workpiece correctly. However few of them were unable to assemble their final workpiece correctly.
Each candidates final workpieces must be well assembled and give a smooth surface.
